How to Register (3 Steps)

Reviewing the Course Registration page (https://workday.students.ubc.ca/course-registration/) is recommended for basic information about how to register in Workday Student.

Check the canvas site for the most up to date information. The University of British Columbia (ubc.ca)

Step 1: Register in core courses that you have not previously completed

  • If you are completing prior year courses and have course conflicts, register in the prior year courses.
  • If you do not have required prerequisites for a course, you will not be able to register in the course.
  • If a course has a lecture and auxiliary sections (i.e. lab, tutorial, etc.), you must register in all each of the associated sections to complete the course registration.

Step 2: Register in Technical Electives (TE)

The number of TEs required will depend on when you started your program.

  • The approved Technical electives are listed at: Technical Electives | UBC Environmental Engineering Program.
  • Note that some TE have pre-requisite requirements, some have limited capacity, not all can be accommodated in a typical ENVL schedule and not all are offered each year.  As well, some approved TE are also considered APSC humanities courses and ENVL students are limited to one of these courses as a TE.
  • Conflicts for the thesis courses (CHBE 493 and CHBE 494 are for environmental topics) are permitted but not for other courses.  The thesis course meeting frequency and times will be revised by the instructor in September for the convenience of all registered.
  • If you are interested in a course that is not on the approved TE list, ensure you contact us and determine if the course will be approved BEFORE taking the course.

Instructions for registering in potential technical electives that are not on the pre-approved list or to take more than the required number of technical electives:

Check that you have the prerequisites (or similar) necessary for the course in question and that it is not restricted. You must then send your request to the UBC Co-Director, providing the following information:

  • the course name, code and link
  • a summary of all primary and secondary technical electives you plan to take (approval is not given one course at a time);
  • a rationale for your request
  • a syllabus

The UBC Co-Director will respond to you via email. Please print and retain a copy of this response until you have graduated and ensure a copy of the approval is sent to the UBC ENVE Administrator so that your record can be updated.

Instructions for potentially registering in a graduate course as a technical elective:

You must email your request to the UBC Co-Director, providing the following:

Step 3: Course conflicts and questions

If you have core course conflicts, registration problems due to prerequisites, other issues or questions, please do not contact the instructors. Contact the office at info@enve.ubc.ca.

Step 4: Check degree requirements

Once you have registered, ensure you have covered all your degree requirements.
