How to Register (3 Steps)

Step 1: Register in a Standard Timetable (STT)

Students will be notified by email with the date and time that they can register through the Student Service Centre (SSC) with your CWL ID.

UBC Engineering uses standard timetables (STTs), which enable students to register for all core courses (not technical electives) at once. Students must register in one of the ENVE STTs (3rd year ENVE STTs or 4th year ENVE STTs) before adding technical electives. Ensure that you are adding an ENVE STT and not an ENVL STT. The latter is for the UBC Environmental Engineering program and not the joint program. There is space for every ENVE student in STTs.

You can manually drop the individual courses you do not need from your STT. Please be aware of the deadlines for dropping courses.

Additional Notes for 4th Year STTs:

  • You may choose either CHBE 459 or CIVL 403. CHBE 459 will already be in the STTs, but you can add CIVL 403 if you wish and once registered, you can then drop CHBE 459.

Step 2: Register in Technical Electives

Registration into technical electives is not guaranteed and is subject to space, thus you need to plan ahead and have multiple options in mind.

Instructions for registering in pre-approved technical electives:

Once your registration opens, you must first register in an STT before you can attempt to register for technical electives via the SSC. If you are unable to register in technical electives due to the system not recognizing your UNBC prerequisite equivalents, which is common (so not to worry), follow the instructions below based on the department. Do not send a registration request until your registration date and time has opened, you have registered in an STT, and you have tried to register the course yourself and was unsuccessful.

DepartmentInstructions (if you cannot register the course yourself)
APSCStudents can register in APSC technical electives themselves except for APSC 486, which has an application procedure usually in May of each year. If you were accepted, EAS will register you into the course.
CHBEEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to the ENVE Administrator.

For CHBE 376 and CHBE 477 requests, you will need to include your grade for CHBE 244 and confirm completion of UNBC’s ENGR 210.
CHEMAdd yourself to the waitlist then email your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to the ENVE Administrator.
CIVL Primary Technical ElectivesEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to the Civil Undergraduate Support.
CIVL Secondary Technical ElectivesComplete the Civil Course Registration Request Form.

For UNBC prerequisites required for a course that the UBC system does not recognize, choose ENVE transit student – Prerequisites met under the Registration Issues drop down menu and provide the UNBC course equivalent’s name and code in the Comments box.

The Civil Undergraduate Support will process requests as quick as possible, but you might not hear back until August as some of these courses are core courses for other students and thus a priority for them. As mentioned, you need to have multiple options in mind in case your top choices are full.
CONSEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to FRST/CONS.
CPSCStudents can register themselves and may ignore the missing prerequisites warning so long as they have the following: UNBC’s CPSC 110 and C- or better in both UNBC’s MATH 101 and MATH 220.
ENVREmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to EOSC/ENVR.
EOSCEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to EOSC/ENVR.
FRSTEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to FRST/CONS.
MECHEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to the ENVE Administrator.
MINEEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to MINE.

Requests may take up to 5 business days to process and no confirmation will be sent.
PLANEmail your name, student number, year level, program (ENVE), the course code, any lab and tutorial sections required, and list all prerequisites you have for the course (including those from UNBC – eg. UNBC STAT 371 = UBC STAT 251) to PLAN.
SCIEStudents can register themselves.

Instructions for registering in potential technical electives that are not on the pre-approved list or to take more than the required number of technical electives:

Check that you have the prerequisites (or similar) necessary for the course in question and that it is not restricted. You must then send your request to the UBC Co-Director, providing the following information:

  • the course name, code and link
  • a summary of all primary and secondary technical electives you plan to take (approval is not given one course at a time);
  • a rationale for your request
  • a syllabus

The UBC Co-Director will respond to you via email. Please print and retain a copy of this response until you have graduated and ensure a copy of the approval is sent to the UBC ENVE Administrator so that your record can be updated.

Instructions for potentially registering in a graduate course as a technical elective:

You must email your request to the UBC Co-Director, providing the following:

Step 3: Check degree requirements

Once you have registered, ensure you have covered all your degree requirements.

  • Students who transited to UBC in (or prior to) September 2021, and have taken Groundwater Hydrology at UNBC, can either follow the 2020/2021 calendar (note that out of 15 credits of technical electives, 6 credits must be from the primary list and not 9 credits as noted in this calendar’s footnote), or follow the 2023/2024 calendar, for 4th year curriculum only, based on the detailed registration guidelines sent to your email.
  • Students who transited to UBC in September 2022 and have not taken Groundwater Hydrology at UNBC, can either follow the 2021/2022 calendar (note that a total of 12 credits of technical electives are required and not 15 as noted in this calendar’s footnote. 6 of these credits must be from the primary list), or follow the 2023/2024 calendar, for 4th year curriculum only, based on the detailed registration guidelines sent to your email.
  • Students who transited to UBC in (or after) September 2023, follow the 2023/2024 calendar. Note that a total of 6 credits of technical electives are required. These credits can be taken from both the primary list and the secondary list.
